DIY Crochet Heart Garland

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! If you are searching for a simple and easy decor idea, look no further than this Crochet Heart Garland. You can make it as long as you want and with whatever yarn you have on hand. Crochet home decor always lends a really sweet and handmade touch to your home. I learned how to crochet in high school after I enthusiastically took up knitting. In my humble opinion, crocheting is a little bit easier than knitting and the patterns are often easy to memorize. This pattern is no exception – the hearts take less than 5 minutes to make and you can make them as big or small as you’d like.

Crochet Heart Garland Free Pattern

Materials:

• Red worsted weight yarn
• White worsted weight yarn (I used worsted lion brand wool-ease yarn but any kind will work. Keep in mind the thicker the yarn, the larger the hearts will be)
• Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn size (I used USH8/5.00MM)
• Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Garland Size:

Creates a 66″ inch long garland with 1.5″ hearts

To create hearts:

1. Create magic ring (tutorial HERE if you need it)
2. Chain 2 
3. Stitch 3 triple crochet into loop
4. Stitch 3 double crochet into loop
5. Chain 1 
6. Stitch 1 triple crochet into loop
7. Chain 1 
8. Stitch 3 double crochet into loop
9. Stitch 3 triple crochet into loop
10. Chain 2 
11. Slip stitch to join into ring
12. Chain 1, trim yarn (leaving at least 4 inches of tail) and pull through to close loop
13. Pull your magic loop closed. Weave in ends.

I alternated my garland with white and red hearts, but you can use any color you would like.

To create garland:

1. Create slip knot and chain 12 stitches
2. Slip stitch into beginning stitch to create loop
3. Continue chain stitches until the desired length is created (I chained 11 stitches) and then add your first heart by slip stitching into the top of the right side of the heart
4. Chain 3 stitches
5. Slip stitch into top of the left heart
6. Chain 15 stitches
7. Slip stitch into next heart
8. Continue until you’ve reached the desired length

For my garland, I spaced each heart 15 chain stitches apart and I used 14 crocheted hearts (7 red and 7 white). These hearts are about 1.5 inches tall in worsted weight yarn, but you could easily use a bulkier yarn and create even larger hearts. 

I used wool yarn but I would actually recommend a cotton yarn if you have it so that it won’t stretch as much. 

I hung my garland along our fireplace mantel and I think it adds a subtle, handmade touch. What’s great about this pattern is that you have a lot of decorating options with it. You could make multiple garlands and hang them up criss crossing each other. Or you could make a longer garland and stretch it across your windows. I like how the hearts look almost like bunting from far away.

If you don’t know how to crochet, I would recommend looking up some videos on YouTube and giving it a try! Crocheting takes practice to learn, but it’s a very versatile art and it’s great for structured home decor designs like baskets, pillows, stuffed animals, etc. Once you have the basics down, it’s very easy to create your own designs and patterns. It’s never too late to learn something new!
