Small trays are a great way to add interest to your space and make things look intentional. I use a lot of small trays as catch-alls, candle holders, and more. When I saw these decoupage bug trays from West Elm, I thought that they would be super easy to replicate with some simple items.
With Halloween coming up, I thought it would be fun to add some creepy bugs to a basic gold tray. The great thing about this type of DIY is that it’s so versatile – you can use almost any color tray and any tattoo you would like. If you’re not a fan of the bugs, you could easily substitute some sweet floral tattoos.

DIY Decoupage Tray
Materials needed:
- One small tray (I used this gold one)
- Temporary Bug Tattoos
- Mod Podge glue
- Paint brush
- Lay out your tattoos and decide which ones you want to use. I chose three different bugs that were approximately the same size.
- Determine the placement of your tattoos. Remove the plastic covers and place face down on the tray (try to keep them in line with each other).
- Using a damp washcloth or paper towel, wet the backs of the tattoos just as you normally would. Be careful not to slip them around the tray since it’s not as grippy as actual skin.
- Once fully damp, remove the paper backing from the temporary tattoo. Allow to fully dry before the next step.
- Using a small paintbrush, carefully cover each tattoo with mod podge glue.
- Once the glue dries, you can use the tray to hold keys, a candle, or any other small item. The tattoos will be protected by the mod podge layer.
