When I was a kid, the Dollar Tree felt like a magical place. My grandma would give me $5 to spend and I would feel like I was making it rain. Obviously, things have changed a lot since I was a kid. Dollar tree items are now $1.25, but that extra 25 cents doesn’t change the versatility of their products.
Dollar Tree has been killing it with their craft section lately, so I felt like I really needed to create something with all of the cool stuff that I’ve been seeing on their shelves. My inspiration came from the rustic/natural/earthy vibe that has been so popular lately. I wanted to make something that felt simple but also classy and functional. Sometimes DIYs can produce results that don’t feel like they’re worth the effort, but I really enjoyed the look of this finished project!
This Rope Vase works great for your spring decor, but it could also feel at home in a coastal/nautical aesthetic. I’m currently using it to hold some tiny spring flowers on my coffee table.
DIY Rope Vase
Materials Needed:
- Dollar Tree Vase (any size will work)
- 1 skein Dollar Tree Yarn – Just Cotton (or more if your vase is very large)
- Spray paint in desired color
- Crochet hook (I used size
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
Note: if you don’t know how to crochet, that’s ok! This stitch is SO easy to learn and anyone can do it. This chain stitch crochet tutorial can get you started if you don’t know how to make a chain stitch.
Instructions:
1. Spray paint your vase if desired. I spray painted my vase white to match the yarn I chose so that any gaps would be less noticeable.
2. While your vase is drying, take two strands of the yarn and make a slip knot. You can get two strands from your yarn ball by pulling from the yarn on top as well as the yarn inside of the ball (you might just have to dig around in the skein to grab it).
3. Crochet a long chain – I started with about 4 feet in the beginning since I wasn’t sure how much I would need. You can always add more if you need to, so don’t cut the yarn yet!
4. Weave in the tail end and start gluing your crochet chain to your vase at the very bottom. Continue working around and around the vase until you reach the top.
5. Once you’re at the top, cut your yarn (leaving about 6 inches of tail), pull the yarn through the last chain, and weave in the tail. Glue your last piece down.
6. Your vase is ready to display!
This DIY is great because you could literally use any vase or any yarn you’d like. You could also incorporate different colors for a striped appearance. The total cost of all of these items was less than $5, so this is truly a project that won’t break your budget.
